OPENING: APRIL 8, 2005 6:00-9:00 P.M.
Jawshing Arthur LIOU
and Jonathan DAVIES

POISSANTGALLERY is pleased to announce the opening of a progressive two person show opening on Friday, April 8, 2005 at 6:00 P.M., and continuing through April 30, 2005.

Jawshing Liou worked as a video journalist in Taiwan before coming to America. He received the 2004 Rising Star award in Fotofusion for his series Picture(s) and Bloodwork. Bloodwork depicts the struggle his daughter endures with leukemia by presenting cell-like creatures rendered digitally. The high definition imagery suggests a microscopic view inside the body, allowing the viewer to relate to the work from a scientific and emotional perspective, from illness to regeneration. This work will be presented by high definition and sound work on a plasma screen TV.

Liou's other body of work, Things that Are Edible, is presented as a series of video stills on plexiglass. Our culture embraces culinary art as an indication of cultural sophistication. Eastern and Western dining practices are often used as icons for ethnic representation, and Liou instills familiar imageries to evoke recognition about the complex relationship between food, class, and ethnicity.

"Maladies and Monsters" - Jonathan Davies' paintings represents the discrete units of genetic data replaced by collaged imagery and bodies of segmented canvas. Jonathan spent several years sequencing genes for research laboratories in San Diego and Los Angeles. He compares his work to Goya's painting "the Sleep of Reason", where a figure is assaulted by nightmarish beasts from his own subconscious. As he states in discussing his body of work: "The recombinant possibilities suggested by scientific practice formulate new sets of bestial nightmares to haunt our subconscious in spite of reason and logic".

POISSANTGALLERY is located at 5102 Center Street, Houston, TX 77007. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday 12-6 pm or by appointment.
